Brookside Nursing Home
The Home
Brookside Care Home is situated in the centre of the picturesque Mid-Wales village of Llangorse. Llangorse, although a popular tourist destination, is predominantly a farming community, sat in the surrounding Welsh mountains. The building itself comprises of two units. The nursing unit is a stone built long house where there are nineteen bedrooms located over two floors. Both units have their own lounge area and dining rooms providing sitting, recreational and dining space for each resident.
The second floor of the residential unit houses a fully equipped training room with a kitchenette and two office spaces with stores. In the nursing unit there is a four-person elevator to the first and second floor, which along with he mobile hoists are serviced on a regular basis. The residential unit has two stair lifts, one on each of the two floors.
The outdoor areas, front garden and rear courtyard are accessible to those in wheelchairs or with mobility problems and support the needs of those with cognitive impairment. The rear courtyard offers a secure area where residents can access independently via a built-in ramp. Garden seating is available in this area.
Local History
St Paulinus church is situated very close to Brookside. The first reference of a church was in 1211, the present building was constructed in the 15th century with a major restoration in 1874. The church registers date back to 1962. The church provides spiritual support to the residents of Brookside.
Mynyydd Llangorse is a hill on the western edge of the Black Mountains and lies two miles east of Llangorse and its lake, which is walking distance from the home. Llangorse lake is the largest natural lake in Mid and South Wales. The lake is famous for its coarse fishing, water sports, and boat trips. The lake is surrounded by a great deal of history not only with the Afanac but the only example of a crannog in Wales dating back to the 9th or early 10th century. Legends and Celtic myths remain a focal point of research and tourist fascination.
Service Provided
Brookeside Care Home offers a bespoke range of services that are tailored to meet individual's needs. It is designed to provide accomodation for thirty one people of various ages. Brookeside Care Home provides a flexible service whereby we are able to respond to individual needs and ongoing changing needs within a package of care. We cater for individuals whose level of support may increase in terms of specialised care and sometimes increase provision to a two to one staff ratio to meet a wider range of developing needs.
We involve other professionals such as GP's, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Community Nurses, Dieticians, Dentists and many other professionals to reduce risks and ensure and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of the individual.
Residents will be encouraged to enjoy as much independence as their circumstances permit. It is acknowledged the risk which independence brings, especially to those already affected by illness and/or disability, whether physical or mental. The risk should be defined but always kept in mind, as to avoid all risk would lead to a very unhealthy existence.
How the Service is Provided
On admission each resident is allocated a key worker, this will be one of the qualified nursing staff on the nursing side and a competent senior care assistant on the residential side. This person will be responsible for the prescribing and evaluation of care, the care needs are identified and developed into a personal plan, which family members are invited to comment on.
All personal plans are reviewed and updated monthly or more frequent, if necessary, to reflect changing needs. A variety of risk assessments are carried out as a systematic process of evaluating the potential risks that may be involved. This will enable staff to identify and plan to minimise the risk of resident, monitor their progress as well as identifying further potential areas of concern.
We respect the rights of the residents in their care, and where possible support them to exercise these rights to the full. If this is not possible, families are encouraged to act on their behalf. Staff can engage the help of an advocate if no family member or representative is available. Advocacy seek to ensure that people, particularly those who are most vulnerable, have their voice heard on issues that are important to them, defending and safeguarding their rights.
Staffing Arrangements
Brookside Care Home employs a team of highly experienced staff – a Registered Manager, qualified nurses and healthcare assistants together with experienced ancillary staff and an administrator – in order to ensure we provide an appropriate care program which is resident focussed and individualised in a supportive and non-restrictive environment.
All the care assistants employed either have a Qualifications & Credit Framework (QCF) qualification in Social & Health Care at Level 2, 3 & 5.
The staffing arrangement at Brookside Home will consist of four teams on the nursing and residential side, with two teams on duty at any one time, covering days and nights. The care staff will work across all four teams, gaining valid experience working with each qualified nurse. We have purposefully not instituted a fixed staffing team as we believe that residents care needs can be subject to continual change and minimum staffing levels put in place today may not be suitable for the needs of the individuals and service provision in the future.
Quality Assurance
Brookside Care Home is committed to ensuring that we continue to provide a good service, which complies with best practice and with the relevant regulations and standards and a service which continues to meet the resident's needs.
The staff at Brookside Care Home are encouraged to think of ways to improve the resident's experience, they will be encouraged to invite scrutiny and welcome feedback. Systems will be implemented to monitor the standards and, on the occasions, when shortcomings are identified, staff will be encouraged to act quick to put them right, followed by reflecting on why they occured in the first place.
Staff employed will have a commitment to providing excellent care. The Registered Manager recognises that without the dedication of the staff it would not be possible to provide quality care and meet the aims and objectives of the home. Staff enthusiasm and achievements will be regularly recognised and celebrated.
Brookside Care Home is committed to working in a collaborative, inclusive and constructive mannerr, both internally and with their external multi-agency parters to the mutual benefit of our residents.
