The Home
Central Surgery Nursing Home is prominently located on the west side of Church Street in Tredegar. The Grade II listed building is a well-designed, well-preserved and rare example of an Edwardian public medical surgery. It was listed for its special historic interest as part of an institution influential in shaping the National Health Service.
Built in 1911 as a surgery by the Tredegar Medical Aid Society it catered for those not able to benefit from the government reforms on health insurance. It provided consulting and treatment rooms, a pharmacy and waiting room on the ground floor. By 1933 the Society was supplying medical care to almost 95% of the local population and this model was used by Tredegar-born Aneurin Bevan for the formation of the National Health Service in 1948.
